De Veras: Exploring Transitions, Memory, Home
Immigrants have always been scapegoated for systemic & institutional failures, but contrary to the belief that they worsen crime, research shows that they reduce it in the US. The current US administration is leading such dehumanizing narratives against immigrants by promising a “crackdown” against them. Their actions, from targeting pro-Palestinian activists to Operation Metro Surge, show how easily violence is carried out against people of color and how brazenly. These portrayals are essentially and effectively perpetuating and exacerbating hate and divisiveness. It is imperative to fight their propagandist dehumanizations and to allow love and respect to persevere. This project will explore the Mexican immigrant memory, transition, and dream to inform the birth of a humanized immigrant truth. That truth which will magnify the complexity of the immigrant, beyond just their immigrant label. In order to capture their intricacies, I have connected with the Mexican immigrant community in Chicago to hear their story. What is their identity, and how do their memories, transitions, and dreams inform that identity? Their truth is what will become important for the humanization of their community.
