Post-Punk Now!
My work examines the post-punk music movement from the late 1970s and early 1980s. I am intrigued with the movement’s pivot away from typical rebellious punk ideals and imagery to its embrace of minimal, intellectual, and somber aesthetics, with avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. It is a reconstruction of modern art influenced by early 20th-century art movements and styles such as Bauhaus, Dadaism, and German Expressionism. My methods of making involve stark contrast and distortion of both images and text to reflect expressionism and the topics that post-punk musicians tackled—nihilism, alienation, and more.
