From Code to Ink
What happens when code leaves the screen? From Code to Ink explores the translation of algorithmic compositions into physical pen-plotter drawings, where variations in tools, scale, and materials introduce unexpected imperfections and outcomes. By comparing the digital and pen plotted results, this project reframes code not as a replacement for the artist, but as a collaborative tool for creative exploration and a new unique way to create generative art physically.

The project begins with rule-based compositions designed in p5.js that are exported as vector-based drawings. They are designed with variety in order to create more interesting explorations. These algorithmic systems are translated into physical marks through pen plotter machines using different tools such as pens, markers and brushes as well as various paper textures and scales. Through this digital-to-physical workflow, the project explores how bringing a digital design into the physical world can transform the original compositions in different ways.

Rather than treating these variations as errors, From Code to Ink embraces them as part of the process itself. The resulting works examine the relationship between digital precision and physical imperfection, highlighting how code, machine and material all interact to produce unique outcomes that cannot exist solely on the screen. It offers a rethinking of generative art by emphasizing artist authored systems, intentional rule making and hands-on material experimentation.

At its core, this project shows a new approach to generative art that preserves individual creativity and authorship while expanding the possibilities of creating physical artwork using both computer and machine as a tool and collaborator rather than a replacement.
