Moving the Needle
The purpose of this research study is to explore representation and identity as it relates to tattoo artists and their clientele living in Chicago, specifically how one's ethno-cultural background influences overall design and application. Through structured research methodologies such as semi structured interviews, stimulated recall, secondary sourcing, and oral histories, this project follows a cohesive roadmap to the systems implemented within the tattoo industry. By applying a human led design methodology, the collection of structured and relevant sources were synthesized, encompassing academic journals and published media that reflect established techniques and methodologies within the tattoo industry. Interviewees were prompted to actively recall their past experiences within the field of tattooing, through crafting visual timelines and references to their previously photographed work. Highlighting and exposing underrepresented communities through a human centered approach and individualized lens into art and design.
